HOW TO MEASURE FOR AN AREA RUG
An area rug is meant to enhance the design of a room, create balance in the space, or ground a seating arrangement. It is best to choose an area rug that is not too large that it overwhelms the room or too small that it is not proportional to the furniture arrangement. For example, a general rule of thumb for a living room is to select a rug that is a foot wider than your sofa on either side. Tuck the rug under the feet of the sofa and an accompanying chair to create a cohesive look in your room. Leave 18 inches of floor around the perimeter of the room or 8 inches for a smaller space.
To test how a rug will look in your room prior to purchasing it, tape out the area in the rug size you think will work best to gauge how it will work.
